SC-231, Terrain Awareness Warning System (TAWS)

Established 2014
Home / SC-231

SC-231, Terrain Awareness Warning System (TAWS), was reactivated by the Program Management Committee (PMC) meeting at the March 2019 meeting. NTSB Safety Recommendations A-17-035 and A-18-015 detail accidents in which aircraft flew with terrain clearances between 500 and 700 feet and crashed into mountainous terrain. The pilots manually inhibited the Class B/C TAWS in both accidents to avoid unwanted aural alerts. SC-231 will review this material along with recommendations from the GAJSC WG and propose solutions.
