Advanced Air Mobility (AAM)

Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) is changing aviation transportation and presenting new technologies that will raise the safety bar for the entire aviation ecosystem. As AAM matures, RTCA is supporting the industry with the necessary standards to help ensure the integration of new entrants and legacy operations continues to be performed in a safe and efficient manner.

RTCA AAM Initiatives

In 2023, RTCA launched a series of workshops and webinars for industry and government participants to address the framework and system requirements of Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) needed to support future aviation flight operations.

AAM Workshop Series for RTCA Members

  • RTCA’s first-ever Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) Workshop convened more than 50 aviation professionals to discuss flight operations, lift/thrust, safety and security, avionics, concept of operations (conops), and ground operations and infrastructure. Read More

  • RTCA’s second Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) Workshop, with over 100 members,  focused on avionics, concept of operations (conops), and spectrum. The discussion centered on advancing technology and the development of certification pathways to ensure safe and sustainable transportation in urban areas. Read More

  • This working group at XPONENTIAL is structured to gather feedback from the AAM industry on the standards and guidance documents needed to safety integrate AAM into the NAS. Safety and security guidance will be part of the discussion as they relate to existing and future standards and requirements to transform a safety plan into an SMS.

Location & Time: AUVSI XPONENTIAL, Wednesday, May 10, 10:30 AM

  • Join RTCA at its next AAM Workshop, Tuesday, May 23rd from 8:30 AM-3:30 PM, discussing AAM Concepts of Operations (Conops). With the convergence of technology, infrastructure, and regulations, we are ready to deliver a new means of transportation in the form of AAM. Conops are needed for each use case in AAM, but what are they? And what are the needs for near-term, mid-term, and far-term? Come participate in the timely discussions to determine what’s next for the NAS.

  • On September 12, 2023, RTCA hosted our fourth workshop on Advanced Air Mobility (AAM). With a focus on near-term implementation and a keen eye on future evolution, Praveen Raju from i28 illuminated the collaborative nature of AAM, emphasizing the need for diverse stakeholders to work together. The target year of 2025 for certifying the first electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft promises transformative applications across air taxis, cargo transportation, and vital medical services. The FAA is actively working on a regulatory framework for integrating AAM into the National Airspace System (NAS), a development anticipated by the industry.

Discussions revolved around the intricacies of accessing different types of airports, introducing automation, and the importance of a whole-of-government approach to infrastructure and regulation. Mike Romanowski of Archer discussed the very near-term focus of operational deployment, highlighting the potential for AAM to revolutionize urban mobility and become a cost-effective alternative to rideshare services. Nick Zhyla from Wisk emphasized the significance of autonomy, procedural methods, and data exchange in shaping Integrated Airspace Operations (IAO). This workshop underscored that collaboration, innovation, and careful planning are the linchpins of AAM’s journey into a new era of transportation.

RTCA Forum for Digital Flight

The RTCA Forum for Digital Flight was established at the beginning of 2023 to find consensus and create calls to action within the aviation community regarding the output of digital flight. The outcome will be the publication of a white paper which will address operations, third party service providers, and aircraft capabilities.
