RTCA Special Committee 238, Counter UAS was created in 2019 to address countering unauthorized UAS operations around airports. The initial work of the committee is focusing on the development of performance and interoperability requirements for Counter UAS systems. SC-238 is working jointly with EUROCAE Working Group 115.
During the plenary meeting held in September 2020, SC-238 and WG-115 achieved their goal of submitting their Operational Services and Environmental Description document into Final Review and Comment. The committee also declared that they are entering the next phase of document development by beginning the Safety and Performance Requirements (SPR) and Interoperability Requirements (INTEROP) documents.
The SPR will define the minimum requirements for non-cooperative UAS detection systems.
The INTEROP will specify the interface within a C-UAS System and for connecting with external systems (e.g. ATM, ATC, UTM/U-space) and actors (such as Airport authorities, Law Enforcement). It will also provide requirements regarding the impact on CNS and ANSP capabilities.
RTCA is putting out a Call for Participation seeking existing members and new members with skills and expertise in UAS detection to join the committee in this new work.
Information about the committee, including its Terms of Reference and current schedule, can be found on the SC-238 committee page. If you are interested in participating in this committee and are already a member of RTCA, please visit Workspace and request to Join Committee.
