Recognizing Nearly a Century of Advancing Aviation Safety and Innovation
Thank you, RTCA Members, for your vital contributions to RTCA Standards
1935
RTCA, Inc. was founded originally as the Radio Technical Commission for Aeronautics.
“Research into the technical development of aeronautical radio aids had been pursued independently by so many organizations—each working intensively to anticipate and meet rapidly changing requirements—that it became clear some guiding agency was necessary to efficiently coordinate these efforts.” - Rex Martin, Assistant Director of the Bureau of Air Commerce
RTCA Today
RTCA has grown into a globally respected organization that shapes the technologies driving modern aviation. For nearly a century, RTCA, Inc., has led the development of enduring, consensus-based technical performance standards which are vital to the work of our members and protect the safety and security of the global aviation ecosystem.

“The fact is, we wouldn’t be where we are today without the work that RTCA has done. This includes the work we’re doing through the 22 special committees that are looking at everything from Data Comm and ADS-B to Personal Electronic Devices and unmanned aircraft. And, of course, the work we’re doing through the NextGen Advisory Committee, or NAC–which, I should note, will be marking its fifth anniversary this fall.” – The Honorable Michael Huerta, FAA Administrator 2013 – 2018
Safety-Critical Standards
RTCA has produced more than 500 technical publications through our consensus-based process. Thousands of aviation products have been built on RTCA standards including DO-178(), DO-160() and DO-254().
RTCA Standards
RTCA Members
RTCA recognizes our members and their contributions across every aviation sector. Subject matter experts from industry, academia and Civil Aviation Authorities around the world convene to produce globally-harmonized standards addressing communications, navigation, surveillance, certification, security and more.
RTCA & Civil Aviation Authorities
RTCA Standards are referenced by regulators all over the world. As of 2025, the Federal Aviation Administration has more than 150 Technical Standard Orders (TSO). Nearly 70 of these functional applications are directly supported by RTCA, Inc. technical products providing the minimum standards for technologies such as Required Navigational Performance, Terrain Awareness Warning Systems, and ADS-B.
Unlocking the Future of Flight
Today, RTCA, Inc. continues its rigorous, consensus-driven approach as it addresses emerging opportunities and challenges in the integration of new technologies into global airspace. We are proud to serve as a vital convener—shaping the future of flight on a foundation of safety and collaboration.
